Names Associated with Kim Jong Un’s Affection for the People

The places named by Kim Jong Un, President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, reflect his world of devotion to the people.

Rungna People’s Recreation Ground

Rungna Islet famous for May Day Stadium with the capacity of 150 000 seats is on the Taedong River which flows through the capital city of Pyongyang. A comprehensive recreation ground was built on this beautiful islet in 2012. It consists of a water park, mini-golf course, modern funfair and dolphinarium.

Kim Jong Un directed great efforts to having the recreation ground built as a world-class one.

One day when the recreation ground was under construction, Kim Jong Un came to the islet. While looking round the construction site, he advised relevant officials on how to make it perfect. He suggested installing chairs with hangers, personally drawing a picture of the chair on his notebook, and said: Out-door dining places should be laid out beside the restaurant serving soft drinks; a monorail or roller coaster should be installed between the two areas of the amusement park; a diving tower, water amusement tanks should be added in the water park and beach volleyball, basketball and volleyball courts should be built; the Rungna area as a whole should be renamed and the word people must be contained in the name. Then he suggested naming the Rungna area as a whole the Rungna People’s Recreation Ground, and the dolphinarium and wading pool on the islet, the Rungna Amusement Park , Rungna Dolphinarium and Rungna Water Park, respectively.

When he visited the recreation ground again in July 2012 prior to its inauguration, Kim Jong Un said that the Rungna People’s Recreation Ground was a very good name and it was truly a recreation ground for the people.

Full-service Ship Mujigae

In September 2015 Kim Jong Un looked round the newly-built full-service ship Mujigae

He had already conceived a plan of building a modern full-service ship equipped with restaurants and other cultural and welfare facilities for the people and setting it between Okryu and Taedonggang bridges. Then he had examined its design several times and named it Mujigae.

The four-storey ship with a displacement of 3 500 tons is 120m long, 25m wide and has a total floor space of about 11 390㎡. It is equipped with a traditional Korean food restaurant, coffee shop, soft drink stand, dining hall, banquet hall, belt-buffet, restaurant on the deck, revolving restaurant and a shop.

After looking round the ship, Kim Jong Un said: Full-service ship Mujigae is a comprehensive service facility for the people and a unique space for their cultural life; it is necessary to offer good service in the ship so that the people can enjoy it to the full; I feel relieved of the accumulated fatigue to think that the people will enjoy themselves cruising the Taedong; I am the happiest when the assets for the wellbeing of the people are created one after another.

Fishing Vessels Tanphung and Hwanggumhae

In May 2013 Kim Jong Un visited a fishery station whose mission was to supply the soldiers with fish. When he looked round the four vessels he had provided to the station some time before, the officials accompanying him requested him to name them. He thought for a while and named them Tanphung No. 1, Tanphung No. 2, Tanphung No. 3, and Tanphung No. 4, wishing that the vessels would land big hauls. (Tanphung means autumn when crops are harvested–Tr.) Later those vessels achieved great successes in fish catching and opened up a new history of gold seas in the DPRK.

When he visited a fishery station in May 2015, Kim Jong Un said that the fishing industry was a major front in the effort for improving the diet of the people. Emphasizing that many modern fishing vessels should be built for the fishing industry, he continued: I named the fishing vessels I had provided to the People’s Army Tanphung, wishing that the vessels would land big hauls; it would be good to name the fishing vessels built by civilian units Hwanggumhae in the meaning that they would open up a new chapter of the history of gold seas.

Today many vessels of Tanphung and Hwanggumhae series are operating in the seas of Korea flying the flags of full load.
